Community-Police Picnics

The Rochester Police Department began offering a Youth Police Academy in the spring of 2011. This program consists of 4 blocks of instruction of about two and a half hours in length. These classes take place once a week and cover different aspects of policing. Young people wishing to get involved in law enforcement for a career, or just interested in learning a little more about law enforcement are encouraged to attend.

Corporal Schwartz demonstrates for a student
how to properly handcuff an individual.

The lead instructor for this program is Corporal Jon Schwartz. Jon is a 22 year veteran of the Rochester Police Department. From 2000 to 2004 Jon took a leave of absence from his full time position with the department to set up the law enforcement program with the Springfield Capitol Area Career Center. Jon established the program there and was their lead instructor. Upon returning to the Rochester Police Department full time, Jon continued to teach part-time at C.A.C.C. until 2010.

In addition to Corporal Schwartz, Rochester has two other former law enforcement part-time C.A.C.C. instructors on staff, Sergeant Kent Bragg and Officer Mark Cordes. Their wealth of experience will prove valuable in developing this program and in teaching our students.
