The Rochester Police Department began utilizing Nixle’s free “Municipal Wire” service in January of 2011 as a way to send out community information, updates and alerts to subscribed residents.
Subscribers can choose exactly how they want to receive information, through e-mail, text message, or off of their account on Nixle’s website. There are 4 types of messages that can be sent out: Alerts, Advisories, Community, and Traffic. Subscribers can choose to follow all types of messages, or they can select only one to two that they wish to hear about.
Another feature that Nixle offers is the ability of the issuing agency to target alerts to community members who might find the information most relevant. For instance, if The Woodlands was affected by a water main break, residents in Circle Drive would not need to get a message notifying them of this. This feature ensures that residents are not bothered with information unless it is specifically pertinent to them.

The Nixle community information and alert system has been used nation-wide by many municipalities with a great deal of success. The alert system has contributed to efforts of locating missing children, elderly persons, and much more. The ability to add photographs to messages means that the entire community can assist in locating and recovering a missing person.
