  • Rochester Police Offer Back to School Safety Tips

Rochester Police Offer Back to School Safety Tips

With the start of another school year, we will soon see an increase in vehicular, pedestrian, and bicyclist traffic in the area. We will especially notice this increase during the morning hours of 7:00a.m. to 8:00a.m., and the afternoon hours of 3:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. With that in mind the police felt it would be an appropriate time to offer some very basic back-to-school safety tips.

If you are walking to school:

    *use the sidewalks when possible

*pay special attention to all traffic signs and signals

*never cross the street against a red light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming

*remember it is easier for drivers to see walkers dressed in bright colored clothing

*choose the most direct route with the fewest street crossings

*when biking to school be careful crossing streets – young bicyclists may want to walk their bike across busy intersections

If you are driving to school or near the school campus areas:

*be very aware of the children walking and biking to and from schools

*watch for children running to and from school buses

*slow down when in school speed zones and school parking lots

*remember you must stop immediately when a school bus is stopped with the stop arm signal extended

A couple other safety reminders are offered due to the layout of the Rochester community. First, we need to keep in mind Rochester has 3 school campus areas. Obviously, caution needs to be exercised in all of the areas. Secondly, Route 29 is a highly travelled highway. The intersections of Route 29 and West Main, and Route 29 and South Walnut are extremely busy during the morning school hours. Please slow down and be patient as students and school buses are crossing at these intersections.

The Rochester Police Department would like to remind drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful as a new school year begins. We encourage parents to speak with their children regarding these issues and other safety concerns. The safety of the citizens in our community, and especially our students, is a concern we all share!

  • Police Department takes advantage of warm weather, holds training

Rochester officers took advantage of the unusually warm weather that our area experienced this last week and held an outdoor training.

Corporal Schwartz, one of the department’s training officers, put together a shoot and move training for officers to hone their skills when drawing and firing their weapons. The training allowed officers to interact with and engage targets utilizing training weapons while moving to cover and gaining distance from a threat.

This type of training is designed to enhance an officer’s proficiency of striking a moving target while they themselves are on the move. By remaining mobile, officers ensure that they are a much harder target for a gunman to hit.

  • Sergeant Bragg unveils new P.R.I.D.E. Award

Last Monday, March 14, 2011, Sergeant Kent Bragg unveiled the department’s newest award, the Physical Readiness Initiative for Developing Excellence, or P.R.I.D.E. ribbon.

This award is presented to members of the department who have earned an overall percentage of 80% or higher on the Cooper Aerobics physical fitness scale. This percentage indicates that officers are in better shape than 80% of people world-wide who fall under the same age demographic. Those officers who earn a 90% or higher are authorized to wear a silver star in the center of the P.R.I.D.E. ribbon.

The officers who were recognized last Monday for scoring in the 80%-89% for their age demographic and are authorized to wear the P.R.I.D.E. ribbon were Corporal Schwartz, Officer Stoll, Officer Harris, and Officer Sommer. Chief Marass and Sergeant Bragg scored within the 90%-99% for their age demographic and are authorized to wear the ribbon with a silver star.
