The Sangamon County Jail is located at One Sheriff’s Plaza, Springfield, Illinois, 62701, and is operated and managed by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department. The jail was established in October 1991 and can accommodate up to 314 prisoners.
The facility incarcerates inmates from all over the county brought in by the Sheriff’s Department officers, local police departments, Illinois State Police, and the US federal and Marshals Agencies. These offenders are the individuals that are unable to pay bail or are denied bail by the county; thus, they must stay incarcerated until their case hearing dates.

The facility also houses medium-maximum inmates charged with sentences less than two years but with a possibility of release on parole. Regardless of their security levels, these inmates are housed in single cells. However, trustees and work-release inmates live in dormitories.

The Illinois Department of Corrections also utilizes Sangamon County jail to house state inmates nearing release from prison. In addition, it also uses the facility to detain probation and parole violators.
